What are Executive Functions?
Executive function is the brain's management system, located in the frontal cortex. It consists of cognitive processes or mental skills that we constantly use to control our thoughts, actions, emotions, and behaviors. These functions help us plan, prioritize, manage emotions, and problem-solve.
Many experts believe that the human mind contains eleven different executive functions. These include:
-
Working memory
-
Flexibility
-
Response inhibition
-
Planning
-
Goal-directed persistence
-
Organization
-
Sustained attention
-
Time management
-
Metacognition
-
Emotional regulation
-
Task initiation
Executive function skills continue to develop due to the neuroplasticity of our brains. Both neurotypical and neurodivergent people benefit from learning about and developing executive skills.
